Research into Print Products - Magazine Adverts

For my research I have looked through my most recent magazines to find DVD adverts to sell and promote a new release on DVD. My magazines consist of the most popular women magazines which are 'Now', 'Closer' and 'Heat'. When looking through the magazines to find DVD adverts I only found three because most of the adverts that are included in these types of women's magazines are promoting hair products, make-up or fashion.

The first magazine advert below is promoting the new film 'The Time Traveler's Wife' that is being released on to DVD. I found this advert in 'Closer' magazine 6-12 February 2010, issue 377. From looking at this advert you can notify instantly that this is advertising a new DVD because of the large image of the DVD which is using most of the space in the advert. They have used a bright blue background colour which attracts peoples attention. The text which they have used is in white coloured writing. All the text is in capital letters to make it stand out and this makes it easier for people to read it. They have used a quote from 'Shelli Sontein - Clear Channel' which says, 'The most romantic movie since the Notebook'. This will make the viewer want to watch this film because they are using persuasive language which will encourage sales. At the bottom of the advert is the release date of the DVD in white capital letter. Also the text is informing viewers that the DVD is also available on Blu-Ray.

The second magazine advert is promoting the new film 'Love Happens' which is being released on DVD. I found this advert in 'Closer' magazine 6-2 February 2010, issue 377. There are two images used in this advert one is the 'Love Happens' on DVD and the other is the same DVD but in Blu-Ray. This makes it clear to the viewer that this DVD will be available on both DVD and Blu-Ray. The images are in the centre of the advert which make them the centre of attention. The background of the advert is white with tiny flower petals falling down the side of the image in the centre. The white background makes the image in the centre the main attention of the advert because this is the most eye catching part of the advert because this is where the main colour in used. At the top of the advert is the words 'The perfect night in', in bright pink writing this will make the viewers think that this DVD will make your quite night in perfect. At the bottom of the advert also in the same bright pink writing it says ' Available on DVD, Blu-Ray & iTunes from February 8th'. This is informing the viewers of the release date and also that the DVD is not just available on DVD but you can buy it on Blu-Ray or from iTunes.

The third magazine advert is promoting 'Eastenders - Last Tango in Walford' which is being released on DVD. I found this advert in 'Now' magazine 15 February 2010. The images used in the advert are positioned in the centre of the magazine advert, the DVD is directly in the centre and either side of the DVD are the two characters from Eastender that are on the front cover of the DVD. The background of the advert is white which is attracting the viewers main attention to the centre where the most colour is used within the images. They have used persuasive language by saying 'Never be seen on TV!', this will make viewers want to buy the DVD because this is their only way of seeing the exclusive footage. At the top of the advert is the name of the show 'Eastenders 25' in silver text. This is because Eastender is celebrating a 25 year anniversary which it has been shown on the BBC. At the bottom of the advert persuasive text has been used to inform viewers that the DVD contains exclusive new footage, special bonus material and 25 classic Eastenders moments and outtakes. A logo for 'Amazon' website has been used to promote to viewers that this DVD can be brought online from amazon.co.uk. In very small text underneath the amazon logo it says 'Free super saver delivery and unlimited free one-day delivery with Amazon prime available. Terms and conditions apply'. This free one-day delivery encourages sales as viewers will have a limited time to use this free offer.

All three of the magazine adverts meet the purpose of promoting and encouraging sales by persuading and influencing viewers to go out and buy the DVD. I prefer the two magazine adverts that have a white background, I think this is a great way to attractive the viewers full attention to the main image on the advert which is the DVD itself. I like how the DVD image is in the centre of the advert with the persuasive text either at the top or bottom of the advert this is still keeping the viewers main attention on the DVD because this is the main bold use of colour. From analysing the three magazine adverts I notice that there is not much text used to promote the DVD. The only text used is the released date, a quote from a well established company to help encourage sales and to influence the viewer that they must see the DVD.
