Analysis of Music Videos

The first music video I am going to evaluate is by 'Lily Allen', the song is called 'Not Fair'. The music video starts with a low angle shot following a pair of cowboy boots walking across the floor. The only sound you can hear is the diegetic sound from the footsteps of the cowboy boots. The camera then rises up as the man wearing the cowboy boots is revealed, as he opens the door country and western music begins to play in the background. The camera zooms in on a sign which says ‘The Porter Wagoner Show’. As the man appears on stage the audience sat in the crowd start to clap and cheer. The audience are dressed in old country clothes as well as the presenter of the show. The presenter introduces Lily Allen, the screen goes black for 2 seconds and the intro to Lily’s song starts to play. While the intro is playing the camera is focusing on the stage where there is an orange background and you can see the silhouettes of the 7 people standing on stage. When the audio begins and Lily starts singing a spot light is shining directly on her, whilst everything else is still in darkness. The camera angle is a long shot so you can see what else is happening on stage behind her. As soon as the chorus of the song kicks in the whole stage lights up and the camera zooms out so you are able to see everyone on stage. Throughout this music video the main three camera shots which are used are mid-shots, close-up shots and long-shots. The editing of the music video is fast cutting the camera doesn’t stay on one shot for more than a few seconds before the next shot appears. The mise-en-scene is very simple in this music video for example the costume that Lily and her band that are on stage with her have a country and western image. They don’t have any costume changes throughout the video. The musical instruments which are used throughout the music video are a drum set, a banjo, a guitar, 3 microphone stands, harmonica and a cello. These instruments are used by the live band playing behind her. To create the country look they have also used a cow, 2 chickens and goat on stage whilst they are performing.

The second Music video I am going to evaluate is by ‘Black Eyed Peas’ and the song is called ‘I Gotta Feeling’. The music video starts with lots of random mid-shots of people walking through a busy town at night, dressed as if they are on there way to a party. The editing of the camera shots are very fast cutting, jumping from one shot to the next which makes it very exciting to watch. The audio of the song starts about 30 seconds in to the video, then the camera keeps cutting from the four artist in the band and you can see them getting ready for a night out. During this part of the video there is a lot of cross cutting editing being used between the four artist this suggest there is a relationship between them. Also you see other people getting ready for a night out for example, the camera cuts from a women being in a shower to another women putting on clothes and make up. You also see people jumping over fences and out from cars or taxis as if they all have just arrived at the same destination. When the chorus kicks in the four artist are at a house party and everybody is jumping and dancing around to the music. Everybody is having a great time smile and laughing. Throughout the chorus you see random camera shots of different things that are happening in the house party. As the video progresses there is a part in the house party where the lighting is very dark and everybody is putting neon coloured paint over the hands and body so they are glowing in the dark and everybody is raving, with bright lights flashing to make it look like a real rave. Near the end of the video you can see camera shots of people walking through the streets again as if they have left the party on their way home, falling over in their heels and lying on the floor which indicates they have had to much to drink. The whole video is made up from very fast cutting camera shots which have been randomly put together to create the stages of people getting ready before the house party, then making there way to the party, drinking, dancing and enjoying themselves throughout the night, and finally people making their way home from the party drunk. There is so many actors used throughout this video to create the image that the house party is full and exciting. The setting of the video is at a very modern house. Different rooms are used such as a bathroom, kitchen, living room, dining room and bedroom. The house looks very glamorous and expensive, it even has a swimming pool that people are throwing themselves in to. They have also used streets to take shots of people walking on their way to the party. The video ends with the words ‘The End’ in bright light with a girl lying on the grass with random pieces of clothes and empty cups around her.

The third video I will evaluate is by ‘Beyonce’ and the song is called ‘Single Ladies’. This video starts by the camera at a long shot showing Beyonce and two female dancer's. They are dressed in black leotards, black heels and their hair is style in a big beehive and long at the back. Beyonce leotard is slightly different as it comes off the shoulder on one side and has a long arm on the other. Also she is wearing a metal glove on her left hand which carries on up her arm. The setting of the video is in a studio where all the background is white, which makes Beyonce and the dancers standout. At times the white background changes to black and grey, with the use of light shadows are created with a spot light on Beyonce and both dancers. The whole of the video is Beyonce and the two dancers, all dancing together in unison along side each other with Beyonce always position in the middle, because she is the main focus. There is not much use of different camera angles during this video most of the shots are long-shots so you are able to see Beyonce and the two dancers in full length. During the video the camera is turning around Beyonce and the two dancers this gives the effect that the room is slowly spinning. Also the camera does zoom in and out at times in the video mainly focusing on Beyonce facial expressions. During the chorus there is a lot of fast cutting, it looks like the video footage has being made faster so Beyonce and the two dancers look like they are dancing extremely fast.

From the three music videos I have evaluated I think that the music video by ‘Black Eyed Peas’ was the most interesting to watch. I found the music video very lively and entertaining. The use of the fast-cutting camera shots made the music video exciting and youthful. The music video followed a story of people getting ready for a party, then making their way to the party and having fun and enjoying themselves. I liked the style of the random camera shots which had been all edited together to create the final look of a house party.
