Part 3

We have chosen to put Kate Moss on the front cover for our version of The Sunday Times newspaper magazine, the reasons for this being she is instantly recognizable to the readers for this type of magazine. She is a fashion icon and is great for the front cover as Kate Moss is a very popular model who appeals to women with an age range of 17-30.
We have kept to the style of the original magazine by keeping the cover very simple and sophisticated. The image of Kate is in black and white keeping to the theme for the Sunday Times fashion magazine. The position of the title of the newspaper is situated in the top left corner and the date is in the top right hand corner which is the same as The Sunday Times magazine. By using the bright colour pink for the title of the magazine 'Style' it makes the title stand out from the dull grey background, this makes the magazine easily recognizable for the audience. We have kept the colour scheme the same throughout the front cover using only bright pink, bright blue and white text. Along the left side of the cover we have created some sub-headings that we think are suitable for this type of magazine. 'Vivienne Westwood Autumn/Winter 2009 Collection', is one of the sub-headings we have used on the front cover because this type of magazine is built up of world famous popular fashion designer. Every other page throughout the original magazine has a double page advertisement for famous fashion designers. The main topics that appear in the magazine we have used capital letters for the text, this is to make the main topics stand out to the audience. We have used the word 'Exclusive' to make the audience want to buy the newspaper for the magazine with an exclusive interview with Kate Moss. The word 'Exclusive' is highlighted in a bright blue background so to stands out to the audience. Also we have used a quote from Kate Moss, that will interest the readers so they will want to read on.

Part 2

The Sunday Times is full with twelve different sections that create the newspaper including the magazines. The different sections of the newspaper consist of nine different topics which are Sport, Appointments, Money, Business, News Review, Home, Travel and Car, Gadgets and Adventure. The three magazines that are included in the newspaper are The Sunday Times magazine, Style and Culture. Also included in the newspaper are free booklets advertising short breaks in northwest England, Wolverhampton Grammer School, Acer computers, Cotton Trades and DFS sofas.

From looking at The Sunday Times newspaper I have chosen different sections from the newspaper to discuss and evaluate the target audience. The first section I looked was the Appointments section in the Sunday Times newspaper you are able to identify the audience straight away with job titles such as Commercial Director, Chief Ombudsman and Group Director, Safety Regulation offering a job salary between £160,000-£180,000 + bonus. The Travel section in the newspaper is advertising a luxury seven day river cruise in Europe with starting prices from £2195 per person. The advertisements uses phrases like 'The worlds greatest journey' and uses maps and images of different location in Europe to interest the audience. An everyday working class family would not be able to afford £2,000 per person, it would usually cost them £2,000 for the whole family to go on holiday abroad for two weeks. The Cars, Gadgets and Adventure sections from the Sunday Times newspaper offers the audience a Buggatti 16C Galibier for only £890,000. It describes the car as a 'Two-tone finish of Bugatti's family car is merely eccentric, the top speed is 240mph'. This shows the readers of this newspaper are middle class with highly paid jobs, because the average family would not be able to afford to buy this type of car. In another section of the newspaper about Home it is advertising huge family homes with 7 bedrooms, 3 receptions, luxury kitchen, 3 bathrooms, double garage and 1 aches of land . The starting prices for these homes start from £650,000 and range to £1,350,000.

When looking at the magazines that come with The Sunday Times one of the magazine is called Style, the main focus on the front page is a female model wearing a short stylish dress that looks very expensive and sophisticated. The images is in black and white with text along side the female model giving the audience a brief description of what the magazine consists of. Along the bottom of the page there is some colourful tabs that highlight some of the topics that are discussed in the magazine such as 'What to wear now' and 'Hot on the high street'. The images that are along side make the magazines target audience to be interested in catwalk and designer fashion. Throughout the magazine there is double page advertisements for top fashion designers such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Chloe, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, DKNY and many more. This shows that the readers of this magazine are interested in expensive designer clothes, so they must have highly paid jobs or husbands with huge salary's to be able to afford anything that is shown in this magazine. Another magazine that is included in The Sunday Times newspaper is Culture. On the front cover is a picture of Madonna which covers the whole front page. A subtitle is called 'At home with Madonna' so we are able to tell that a topic in this magazine will be an interview with Madonna about her pop career. Looking through the magazine there is an article about Charles Dickens, this shows the audience of this magazine are very educated and are interested such subjects like history. There is lots of text throughout this magazine with a minimum of two images on each page. Also there is advertisements for operas, ballet and musical theaters which are aimed at an middle class audience, with ticket prices between £35-£79 per ticket.

Overall I think that The Sunday Times newspaper is targeting a middle class audience. My reasons for this are because of the topics that are discussed throughout this newspaper are aimed at business men and women with highly paid profiled jobs who are able to spend thousands of pounds on designer clothes, expensive cars, luxury holidays and houses.

Part 1 Analysising The Sunday Times and The Sunday Mirror

I will be researching in to my chosen newspaper which is 'The Sunday Times' and comparing it with another Sunday paper which is 'The News of the World'.

When looking at the Sunday times newspaper I could tell straight away that this newspaper is aimed at a middle class audience. The majority of the audience who read this newspaper are middle aged business men, this is because in todays society men are portrayed in the media to be the harder working and have more professional jobs. The Times newspaper highlights such topics as politics, the environment, business and money which are all topics that are targeted at successful business men. All the story's in the Times newspaper are very educational and informative, they talk about events that have happened all over the world not just everyday gossip about celebrity lives. The front page of the Times newspaper is full with text and sub-headings, it has very few small images to make the newspaper look attractive for the audience.

From looking at the News of the World it is very obvious that this newspaper is aimed at working class audience. The front page is full with celebrity gossip and football news, there is lots of use of large images which fill most of the page with small text headings to make you buy the newspaper to find out more. There is more use of colour throughout this newspaper to make it more attractive for the audience by use of images and colourful text to make headings stand out. This newspaper is defiantly not education is an easy read for the audience.

A2 Media Assignment 1

Stage 1 - I will be researching the Sunday Times newspaper, within my group i will produce a written report into the style of newspaper and the target audience.
Stage 2 - My main focus will be the magazine that accompanies my newspaper, I will analyse and discuss the style of the magazine.
Stage 3 - Finally I will produce a draft on paper and final version in Photoshop of a front cover for my newspaper's magazine.

A2 Media Blog

My understanding of creating media texts has developed from the prelimary tasks and coursework that I produced during my crime film that I created in AS media. During the crime film I learnt how to edit and cut my crime film using the mac computers. I learnt about the different types of camera angles and shots used to create a crime film. Also I learnt about the different props and lighting used in a film Noir. I learnt how to create my own music on Garage Band to be used in my crime film. I learnt how to analysis different film Noir's so I would have more understanding about what i need to include in my crime film.

I consider to be my strengths and weaknesses of my practical skills during the process of making the crime film to be the editing and cutting of the crime film on the mac computers was one of my weaknesses. Also another weakness was the lighting to create atmosphere throughout the crime film. One of my strengths during the practical work was camera shots and angles that I used in the crime film to create tension and make the camera shots fast moving to make the film more exciting. Another strength of mine was finding props and locations that where relevant to my film which I enjoyed.

The program that I am confident with using is Garage Band. I need to further develop my skills using Final Cut and Photo Shop because I am not totally confident using this software.

I plan on changing the way I work at A2 level by always meeting deadlines so I don't fall behind on work. Also using my class time wisely so I am able to complete as much work possible during lesson time.

I achieved a grade C as AS level and my target grade for A2 will a level C.
